Domain name privacy is a service domain registrars offer to domain owners to protect them from unnecessary publicity.

The whois directory normally publishes names and addresses of domain name owners and if you just bought a domain without domain privacy, chances are that your personal details could also be published on the whois directory.

To do a check of your domain name on the whois directory, you can go to who.is/whois/domainame.com

So when buying a domain name and would prefer privacy, then you should also ensure that domain privacy is included as part of the package. You may have to pay additionally for it or get it free at some registrars.

Spammers may target your
When someone does a whois query for your domain name, they can easily see a lot of your personal details such as name, email address, billing address and even phone number. This may not be a bad thing in entirety but could also encourage spammers to attack you or use your personal details in a way you are not comfortable with.

How to get domain name privacy
- Simply select it when ordering for a domain name
- You may pay an additional fee to get it
- Do a whois search for that domain name to confirm if privacy has been enabled
